Changes in the Law

Although New York has not adopted laws permitting legal marriage or civil unions for same-sex couples — twelve other states and the District of Columbia have laws on the books that address these issues in some way, shape or form.

New York Governor David Patterson has just signed a bill that does recognize the rights of same-sex partners living in New York that were legally married in another jurisdiction. As such, these couples will have the same legal rights as other married couples.
